Launch of Focused Work White Paper

Today (Monday 6 June 2022), HeliOffshore launched the Focused Work White Paper to provide practical tools for managing distraction in today’s connected and dynamic aviation work environment.

The white paper aims to raise awareness of distraction that may impact on performance in the work environment, and to reduce negative outcomes associated with distraction events when they occur. The goal is to ensure that employees remain focused on their specific task throughout the entire process, by defining a framework to help individuals identify and manage internal and external sources of distraction in the workplace.

Tim Rolfe, CEO, HeliOffshore, commented: “The modern work environment has transformed over recent years as a result of digital communication and technology, with individuals now being contactable 24/7. This new connected environment presents an opportunity and a need to provide new practical guidance, to ensure that individuals across the industry are best equipped to focus on their tasks, reducing risk and improving frontline safety.

“This paper outlines our new model, developed in collaboration with HeliOffshore members, to help individuals recognise where they are vulnerable to distraction before starting work, how to recover from distraction during work, and how to capture errors made as a result of distraction before finalising a task. I’d like to thank the members of the working group for sharing their expertise and time in developing this important safety programme.

“We hope the recommendations will be adopted and implemented by members over the coming months, either in whole or through modifications to existing processes and systems.”

The Focused Work White Paper outlines potential next steps and considerations for management of the training, development, and implementation of a Focused Work programme, along with provisional guidance on how individuals can recover from non-focused work.
