Operational Effectiveness Workstream

The HeliOffshore Safety Intelligence Programme (HSIP) reveals 51% of fatal accidents are due to controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) and loss of control in-flight (LOC-I).

The Operational Effectiveness Workstream focuses on the frontline tools, techniques and training required to improve current safety performance. Activity includes supporting developments to enhance take-off and landing safety performance.

Workstream Leads: J. J. Gerber, Operations Service Manager, Cougar Helicopters and Pat Attaway, Director of Operations, PHI Inc.

The Operational Effectiveness Workstream focuses on three areas of the HeliOffshore Safety Performance Model:

  1. Flightpath Management and early identification of deviation

  2. Effective Use of Automation including Design and Documentation

  3. Detect/Avoid Obstacles to create space to manoeuvre and enhanced ability to detect and avoid obstacles

“Our priorities are to deliver the operational efficiencies and enhanced safety processes so no lives are lost through offshore aviation.”
