HeliOffshore releases its new Offshore Accident and Event Database

HeliOffshore has today (21 September 2023) launched its new Accident and Event Database, providing members with access to comprehensive offshore accident data from 2013 onwards in one online database.

The valuable new resource is now live for members to access and search, with all new accidents and events added as they happen. The Accident and Event Database includes HeliOffshore’s proprietary data about relevant offshore aviation accidents, as well as information from a wide range of industry sources.

Members can use the new digital database to search for a range of details about accidents that have occurred over the past decade, including images, media coverage and accident reports.

The easy-to-use dashboard function allows users to filter accident data by region and area, accident occurrence type, aircraft type and much more, enabling organisations to locate detailed accident and event information in one place. As search filters are applied, the graphs displaying the accident data immediately updates, providing users with direct feedback.

Dr Matthew Greaves, HeliOffshore’s Safety Intelligence Programme Director, said: “We believe our new Accident and Event Database will be a valuable shared resource for the offshore helicopter community. It provides organisations and safety professionals with direct access to top-level accident statistics and regional and aircraft- specific details in one digital hub, as well as providing access to industry trends to enhance our shared understanding of safety performance.”

“As a proof of concept and the first step in our mission to create a complete picture of all historical offshore aviation accidents and safety performance, the first release of the database includes the accident data from 2013 that made up our analysis in the latest HeliOffshore Industry Safety Report. Our longer-term aim is to expand the database coverage to include a wider set of offshore helicopter accidents, and to increase the ‘depth’ of our data to include lower severity incidents.”

The new Accident and Event Database is the first step in HeliOffshore’s Digital Twin project, which will use real-world data to provide a complete picture of the industry’s safety performance to help the sector better identify and understand trends, seasonal patterns and correlations in offshore accidents.
